The gap between what a French student can read and what they can say is wider than in any other language we teach. Closing it is most of the work.

What you’ll work on

Five things people say before they book.

One of them is usually the reason. The topic underneath is what a tutor would put the first month into.

/01

“Reading aloud sounds like English words in French order.”

Pronunciation

Nasal vowels, liaison and the letters that are not said, worked early — because a habit formed in year one is expensive to undo in year three.

/02

“Agreement rules are known and applied about half the time.”

Tenses and agreement

Passé composé against imparfait, agreement with être and avoir, and the subjunctive, in the order your course meets them.

/03

“Every answer starts with a long silence and then a translation.”

Speaking under pressure

Answering in a full sentence, at speed, without translating in your head first — practised until the pause shortens.

/04

“Classroom audio is clear and anything else is noise.”

Listening

Real French at real speed, from broadcasts and conversation rather than the slow classroom recordings.

/05

“The vocabulary is there in practice and gone in the exam room.”

The oral exam

The format your course sets, rehearsed enough times that the nerves stop being the thing that decides the grade.

None of them quite it?

Bring the syllabus, the textbook or the last score report to a first lesson. Every French tutor here plans against what you actually have, not against a standard course.

Who teaches it

French, taught by 2 of these 124.

In whichever order you find useful. Thirty minutes with any of them is free, so meeting two before you choose costs nothing but the evening.

What it costs

Priced by level, not by subject.

Tutors set their own rate and Saal adds nothing on top of it. These are the bands they set it inside, the same in every subject, and the lowest anyone charges to teach French is $30/hr.

Move or cancel any lesson up to twelve hours ahead at no charge, and the card is charged the morning after a lesson happens. Packages and refunds.

$336/mo

8 lessons a month, at $42 each — a 60-minute lesson against a rate quoted for 50. A ten-lesson pack takes $42 off that.

Your first thirty minutes

Thirty free minutes, and this is what they are for.

01

Read a short passage aloud

Ninety seconds. Pronunciation habits are audible immediately and they shape everything after.

02

Have a conversation

Simple and real. The tutor is measuring the pause before you answer, not the mistakes inside it.

  • Pronunciation
  • Tenses and agreement
  • Speaking under pressure
  • Listening
  • The oral exam

03

Leave with two sounds to fix

The two that will make the biggest difference to being understood, plus how to practise them alone.
