Two very different problems wear the same label. A child who cannot decode the words and a child who reads them all and remembers none need opposite lessons.

What you’ll work on

Five things people say before they book.

One of them is usually the reason. The topic underneath is what a tutor would put the first month into.

/01

“Reading aloud is slow and full of guesses that start with the right letter.”

Phonics and decoding

Letter sounds, blends and syllable patterns, taught systematically for the readers who need it and skipped entirely for the ones who do not.

/02

“Every word is correct and nothing is remembered at the end of the page.”

Fluency

Reading at a pace that leaves attention over for meaning, built by repeated reading rather than by reading more books.

/03

“Unfamiliar words get skipped without the reader noticing.”

Vocabulary

Words learned in context and in families, so a new word is a guess with evidence rather than a stop.

/04

“The what happened question is easy and the why is blank.”

Comprehension strategies

Predicting, questioning and summarising, practised out loud until they happen without being asked for.

/05

“The book is understood and the worksheet still comes back half wrong.”

Reading to answer a question

The test skill: finding evidence, ruling out the almost-right option, and writing an answer the length the question wanted.

None of them quite it?

Bring the syllabus, the textbook or the last score report to a first lesson. Every Reading tutor here plans against what you actually have, not against a standard course.

In whichever order you find useful. Thirty minutes with any of them is free, so meeting two before you choose costs nothing but the evening.

What it costs

Priced by level, not by subject.

Tutors set their own rate and Saal adds nothing on top of it. These are the bands they set it inside, the same in every subject, and the lowest anyone charges to teach Reading is $24/hr.

Move or cancel any lesson up to twelve hours ahead at no charge, and the card is charged the morning after a lesson happens. Packages and refunds.

Your first thirty minutes

Thirty free minutes, and this is what they are for.

01

Read a page aloud

Two minutes at grade level. It separates a decoding problem from a comprehension one on the spot.

The terms, in full

  • Free
  • 30 minutes
  • No card asked for

02

Retell it

In their own words. What comes back tells the tutor where the attention is going.

  • Phonics and decoding
  • Fluency
  • Vocabulary
  • Comprehension strategies

An honest one, plus the two things to work on and what to read at home this month.
