Trust & safety

A hundred people apply. Eleven of them teach.

Checks before a profile goes live

The hundred

One mark, one applicant, shaded by the gate that stopped them

The checks run in order, so somebody who fails the degree check never sits the subject test.

The person on the call is the person on the profile.

The limits

What a cleared badge still does not tell you

Five procedures produced that badge. None of them asks any of the four questions below.

  1. A background search reads records

Checkr searches county and state courts, the federal district courts and the national sex offender registry. What comes back clear is a clear record. Nobody can search for what was never reported.

  2. A degree is not teaching

The registrar confirms somebody studied the subject. Whether they can explain it to a thirteen-year-old at nine on a Tuesday is what the subject test and the first three lessons sample, and a sample is what they are.

  3. A review is one person's hour

Every review here comes from a lesson somebody paid for, so nobody writes one without booking first. It is still one student, one subject and one afternoon. The tag filter on a profile is there to find the ones that match your situation.

  4. None of it says a tutor suits your child

Five checks answer whether somebody is safe and qualified to teach. Whether your daughter will talk to them is the question the free first thirty minutes was built for, and it is the one we hand back to you.

After the badge

The checks do not stop on the day a profile goes live

Three things take a live profile back down again, and each one has a trigger with a clock attached to it.

  1. Every twelve months

    The criminal search runs again

Checkr re-runs the county, state and federal search on the anniversary of the last one. The tutor keeps teaching while it is open, and their profile carries a note naming the check that is inside a re-run.

  2. The day a check lapses

The profile comes off the site

A licence that expires or a search that does not come back hides the profile that morning. Lessons already booked are cancelled and refunded, and nobody can book a new one until it clears.

  3. One serious report

    The account closes

We suspend first and ask afterwards. A closed account cannot come back under a new address, because the ID check runs against a legal name. That is why it is the first gate rather than the easiest one.

Three rooms

A lesson happens in one of three places, and the rules differ in all three

In person is two lessons rather than one, with two sets of rules, so this page writes it out as two.

  • On the call

Most lessons, and every free first half hour

    • Lessons run in the browser, with no download and no link to pass around.
    • Recording stays off unless you and the tutor both switch it on.
    • Messages run through Saal, so nobody trades a phone number.
  • At your table

The lesson a parent asks about

    • An adult stays in the home and in earshot for any student under 18.
    • Lessons happen in a shared room, never behind a closed door.
    • Your address reaches the tutor once you book, and never before.
  • Somewhere public

Neutral ground, if you would rather

    • Libraries, campus study rooms and coffee shops all count.
    • Name the place yourself if the tutor's suggestion does not suit.
    • A tutor who asks to meet somewhere private is a report, and the button is on their profile.

Reporting

Tell us, and a person reads it inside four hours

Every lesson on Saal carries a report button. Four things follow when somebody presses one.

If it is an emergency

Call 911 first

If anyone is in immediate danger, call 911 before you call us. Tell us afterwards. We hold the lesson record, the message thread and the tutor’s file for as long as the police need them.

What helps

  • The lesson date and the tutor's name
  • Screenshots of anything said outside Saal
  • What you want to happen, if you know
  1. You send it

    Any time

The button is on every profile, on every lesson in your dashboard and at the foot of this page. Two sentences is enough to start one.

  2. A person reads it

    Within 4 hours

Seven days a week, and never a queue you have to chase. The tutor is not told who reported them.

  3. The calendar clears

    Same hour

Anything involving a child, an address or money suspends the account that hour. Everything else pauses while we ask.

  4. You hear the outcome

    Within 5 working days

In writing, naming what we did about it. Lessons you paid for and did not get are refunded before the case closes.
